Have you ever stopped to think about the weight of your words? Not just metaphorically—but energetically.

Energy is all around us. It’s in the chair you’re sitting on, the device you’re reading this from, and even the air you breathe. At the most fundamental level, atoms—the building blocks of everything—are pure energy. But many people don’t realize that our thoughts and words also carry energy, and they profoundly impact our emotional and physical well-being.

Think about the silent mantras you repeat to yourself:

Or perhaps, at times, you’ve spoken harsh words toward others. But have you ever wondered… what that negative self-talk or verbal criticism actually feels like in your body?

Let’s try a simple yet powerful exercise to experience this firsthand.

“Talk to the Hand” Energy Exercise

Step 1: Prepare Your Mind and Body.

Sit quietly for a moment. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and exhale slowly. Bring your awareness fully into the present.

Step 2: Speak Loving Words to Your Right Hand.

Hold your right hand out, palm up. Gently say words like:

Notice how your hand feels as you speak or think these words.

Step 3: Speak Hateful Words to Your Left Hand.

Now hold out your left hand, palm up. Say or think words like:

Again, tune into the sensation. How does your left hand feel in comparison?

Step 4: Compare the Sensations.

Do your hands feel different? Does one feel heavier, colder, or more tense? Does the other feel lighter, warmer, or more open?

Optional Step: Try the exercise only using your thoughts rather than speaking aloud. This is a powerful way to experience how your internal self-talk affects your energy.

Important: Be sure to “clear” the energy after each round by gently brushing off your hands or shaking them out.

While there’s no right or wrong outcome, most people report that the “hateful word” hand feels heavier, denser, or even uncomfortable. Imagine what happens when you repeatedly direct that energy toward yourself or others over time.

This invisible heaviness doesn’t just disappear. It lingers, often manifesting as emotional imbalance, energetic blockages, and even physical symptoms like fatigue, tension, or disease.

So, the next time you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk or speaking unkindly to someone else, pause and remember: your words have energy and weight.

Call to Action:

Practice the “Talk to the Hand” exercise this week. Then, journal about what you experienced. Were you surprised by the sensations? How might this awareness change the way you speak to yourself and others?

Until next time—Be the Change.
