What is Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT)?
Imagine a healthcare system where the whole person is treated; not just the diagnosis. Where ancient healing arts are seamlessly woven into modern medicine, creating a truly holistic experience for those facing illness, injury, or everyday stress.
Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT) was born from this vision. Launched in 2009 by the Urban Zen Foundation, founded by Donna Karan and developed in collaboration with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee, this program trains healthcare professionals and yoga practitioners to integrate Eastern healing techniques into Western clinical settings and beyond.
The UZIT curriculum includes training in:
Yoga therapy and restorative movement
Essential oil therapy
Reiki
Breath awareness and body scan meditation
Nutrition and contemplative care
Originally designed for hospitals, UZIT has proven universally beneficial across communities, from senior care and hospice to schools and wellness centers. It also serves those supporting others: caregivers, educators, and medical staff.
What to Expect in a UZIT Class
A typical Urban Zen session is gentle, deeply restorative, and intuitively led. You’ll be guided through:
Essential oil aromatherapy to ground your senses
Mindful movement to awaken and settle the body
Restorative yoga poses where you’ll be fully supported with props
Breath awareness and body scan meditation to reconnect with the present moment
Optional Reiki for subtle energy alignment and relaxation
Each element is designed to soothe the nervous system and address common symptoms of distress, collectively known as PANIC™:
Pain, Anxiety, Nausea, Insomnia, Constipation, and Exhaustion.
Beyond physical relief, you’ll also learn tools for mindfulness, stress management, and sustainable self-care, skills that help you navigate life with greater ease, presence, and resilience.
